Brennan's Success Story

Brennan and his wife and child standing beside an airplane.Brennan was 23 years old and in his second year at law school in 2016 when his life completely changed. He and his wife were in a life-threatening motorcycle accident. Thankfully, both recovered, but Brennan had to have his right leg amputated at the knee.

Before the accident, Brennan described himself as an avid do-it-yourselfer, woodworker, licensed private pilot and licensed master captain. “Nothing was the same after losing my right leg,” Brennan said.

He initially used a large national company for his prosthetic, but he wanted more personal interaction and communication with his providers. And now, with a toddler at home, he needed to get it right.

“Everything was a concern,” Brennan said. “Big hitters were: Can I get a good enough 'fit' on my prosthetic to allow everyday, nonstop use? Will I be able to keep up with my toddler if she starts running away?”

That’s why he chose our NovaCare Prosthetics & Orthotics center in Cape Girardeau, MO.

“Dale Collins has been the star of the show throughout my experience with NovaCare,” Brennan shared. “His thought process on prosthetics is irreplaceable and invaluable. Being an amputee himself, Dale has an insight into what patients need like no one else. Combine that with his technical skills, practical expertise and unparalleled professionalism -- you’ve got a secret recipe for smooth ambulation.”

Brennan says one of the peaks in his healing journey was strolling in his backyard with his toddler on his shoulders and his newborn in his arms. But he was also incredibly excited to fly again. “It was demoralizing thinking that my wings were ‘clipped,'” Brennan said. “Pilots have to have both legs to fly (can’t steer the plane if you can’t push the rudder petals with your feet). My prosthetic allows me to do everything in the cockpit that I could prior to losing my leg. I may not be Maverick, but at the end of the day, it still gives me the Top Gun feeling."

We’re honored to help you along your journey, Brennan.
