    Concussion Management

What is a concussion? A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Although there may be cuts or bruises on the head or face, there may be no other visible signs of a brain injury. Loss of consciousness may or may not occur, and signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days after. Concussion symptoms typically resolve within 7 to 10 days with active rest and the appropriate structured gradual return to play, which can be assisted by a physical therapist or athletic trainer.

What can physical therapy do for individuals suffering from concussion symptoms?

Vestibular Rehabilitation - Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy used to treat vertigo. The goal of treatment is to minimize dizziness, improve balance and prevent falls by restoring normal function of the vestibular system.

Visual Tracking Interventions - Studies have shown a significant decrease in oculomotor function following concussion, including inability to perform rapid eye movements. Physical therapy may improve ability to perform motor tasks while tracking objects with eyes, including balls, defenders and goals for sport-specific tasks.

Balance Training - Often, balance is significantly limited in individuals with a concussion. Numerous studies have shown the benefit of balance-specific training, particularly for athletes who rely on their stability.

Cervical Assessment - Following mild head injury, cervical spine or muscle dysfunction can go un-diagnosed, which may contribute to ongoing headaches or dizziness.

As mentioned above, the majority of symptoms resolve within the first 7-10 days. If symptoms persist for two weeks or more, a referral to an appropriate physical therapist specializing in concussion or neurologic care is warranted. Programs We Offer
    Rehabilitation for Cancer Patients

"This year, more than 1.5 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer and nearly 70 percent of those individuals will live at least five years post-diagnosis." -Advance for Physical Therapy and Rehab Medicine

Even the best cancer treatments can sometimes cause debilitating side effects. Inspired by this premise, NovaCare Rehabilitation in Minnesota has obtained special certification to specifically help cancer survivors. This designation allows qualifying NovaCare Rehabilitation clinics to offer premium oncology rehabilitation services.

To qualify, each clinic successfully demonstrated it could combine conventional medicine with an evidence-based, standardized model of oncology rehabilitation service, successfully implement a program evaluation and implement new treatment protocols and rehabilitation training.

Through the certification, patients will benefit from services covered by health insurance providers. Cancer rehabilitation services will be delivered by clinical staff trained in how to help survivors of all forms of cancer. Currently, 10 NovaCare centers in Minnesota offer this program.

Please contact Paul Hansen with any questions at 763-271-6865 or by email.
