    Programs We Offer
    Blood Flow Restriction(BFR)

BFR training, also known as occlusion therapy, uses a self-regulating pressure cuff to affect blood flow to/away from extremity. The goal is to occlude venous return away from extremity but allow for continued arterial flow to muscles during exercise. This results in pooling of blood in the involved extremity and creates an environment in which the muscles feel as though they are being stressed at a higher level

How does it work? The first step is to check what pressure the patient should be training at to allow for safe training. Since numerous factors can affect what pressure should be used by each patient, it is important to get a personalized pressure to train with. Once pressure has been selected the patient will perform low-load resistance training with high numbers of repetitions and short rest periods. The number of exercises can vary but a BFR training session can last anywhere from six to thirty minutes.

Is it effective? Numerous studies have shown muscle hypertrophy and strength gains using BFR at resistance loads of only 20 to 30 percent of one repetition max (1RM). Muscle hypertrophy using BFR at low loads has shown results similar to traditional strength training at ~70 percent of 1RM. Studies also have shown tissue damage that normally occurs with high-load resistance training is minimal when using BFR with a low-load.

Who can benefit? Patients who have atrophy as a result of injury or surgery are usually good candidates for BFR training. Patients who have generalized weakness and cannot tolerate heavy loads needed for gaining muscle mass may also be good candidates as they return to full activity. It can also assist with breaking down fibrosis in muscles.

What makes it safe? BFR training at NovaCare Rehabilitation is done under the supervision of a trained physical or occupational therapist. It is constantly regulating the pressure applied to the limb to keep it consistent through activity.

    Movement Screens

Have pain in your hip, knees, back or ankles? Do you have running injuries or injuries that hamper your workouts or daily life? Do you have an athlete in your family who is recovering from an injury or is looking to improve their performance?

NovaCare Rehabilitation is proud to offer movement assessments throughout the Southern Maryland and DC market! Nearly half of all injuries are caused by overuse and non-contact incidents. Utilizing a multitude of assessments, through Fusionetics and dorsaVi, we are able to confidently assess your movement efficiency and use corrective exercises to address deficiencies, reduce risk of injuries and improve performance!

Using dorsaVi, the only FDA approved 3D wearable sensors, we are able to use objective data collection during the athletic movement index and running assessments to identify, with pinpoint accuracy, where exactly weaknesses during your movement are stemming from. Coupling these results with the results from a Fusionetics Movement Efficiency Screen, our sports medicine specialists are able to create a corrective exercise program specifically tailored to your needs. Our corrective programs can even be accessed on your phone through the Fusionetics application!

In addition, we use these results to communicate with our strength and conditioning specialists that work within our centers to implement plans for either post-rehabilitation conditioning or performance training, offering the entire continuum of care for both injury care and performance! Our assessments are offered at all locations, so contact us and get your movement assessed today!

    Trigger Point Dry Needling

    Dry Needling

Dry Needling (DN), also known as intramuscular Manual Therapy (IMT)/Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN), is a modern Western medical modality. DN is a procedure in which filiform needles are used to deactivate myofascial trigger points. It is NOT acupuncture.

    Clinical Procedure

DN is considered a physical medicine modality that does not require any specialized equipment. Therefore, patients do not need to do any type of preparation for this procedure. Patients typically report immediate pain relief that can last a few hours to a few weeks. Frequency of treatment is different for individuals; however it is recommended that repeat DN not be done on the same areas within 48-72 hours. For the maximum results, DN is used with other modalities and exercises in the center.

What type of conditions can be treated with dry needling?

Dry needling can be used to treat low back and neck pain(including radiculopathy), shoulder and arm (tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, impingement), hip and leg pain (sciatica, muscle strain, calf tightness/spasm), foot (ankle sprain, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis), headache, face and jaw (TMJ) pain and fibromyalgia.

Are there side effects/complications after treatment?

Most patients will feel soreness from a few hours to two days, which is the normal response from dry needling. Bruising is expected sometimes within blood vessel areas. Any time needles are used there is a risk of infection. However, at NovaCare Rehabilitation, the therapist uses a single packed/disposable and sterile needle during treatment.
