Sports Injury Prevention Tips
Playing sports is a great for children of all ages. With any sport there are risks of injury involved with playing. Parents need to realize players may wear cleats, use bats/sticks and throw/hit/kick balls that can travel at high speeds!

Here are some simple steps parents can take to help prevent their child from sustaining a sports-related injury:
  • Getting your child involved in an accredited youth league with certified coaches is important for injury prevention.

  • Make sure your child gets a suitable amount of sleep. If children aren't well rested they can get sloppy on the field.

  • The equipment must fit properly to do its job. Don't use hand-me-down equipment unless it is re-furbished and fits properly.
Although all injuries aren't avoidable, following these essential first steps can help parents keep their child safe on the ice.

Stretching Tips
Athletes of all ages can improve their performance simply by improving their flexibility. Flexible muscles allow you to lengthen your stride and reach. Improving flexibility also decreases injuries!

Before stretching muscles, you need to warm-up the muscles. When muscles are cold and tight, they do not easily stretch and are more prone to injury. If they are warm and loose, the muscles have the potential to be used for greater strength and power. A simple round of jumping jacks or jogging in place for 5 minutes will bring the blood flowing to the muscles and allow them to warm up before being stretched.

Follow these tips to stretch properly:
  • Always do a cardio-vascular warm-up before you stretch.

  • Hold all stretches for at least 30 seconds.

  • For optimum flexibility improvement perform stretching at least 3 times per day.

  • No ballistic (bouncing) stretching – hold a static position.

  • Focus on these muscle groups: hamstrings, quadriceps, calves.
For more tips on stretching and how to improve flexibility, call the NovaCare Sports Injury Hotline at 216-956-9312.
