April is National Occupational Therapy Month Occupational Therapy is skilled treatment that helps individuals achieve independence and regain “the skills for the job of living” that are important for a healthy and productive lifestyle. Occupational Therapists offer education and provide care to people of all ages who have been affected by accidents or trauma, as well as repetitive motion disorders. Who benefits from Occupational Therapy? The benefits of Occupational Therapy are numerous…as are the variety of individuals who can benefit from treatment! In both inpatient and outpatient settings, Occupational Therapists treat work-related injuries, limitations following a stroke or heart attack, arthritis, burns, spinal cord injuries, sports injuries…just to name a few! A New Center in Crystal In February, we opened a new center in Crystal. The new clinic includes the merging of our Osseo and Crystal clinics and staff. Together they will offer a more extensive Physical and Occupational/Hand Therapy experience to our patients in a new clinic. The new center will offer Physical Therapy, Occupational/Hand Therapy, WorkStrategies, Women's Health and much more. NovaCare in Morris at Stevens Community Medical Center Neighbors Taking Care of Neighbors In partnership with NovaCare Rehabilitation, Stevens Community Medical Center offers comprehensive Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy for inpatients and outpatients. Our staff of therapy professionals works with you and your physician to develop customized therapy programs that deliver maximum results. Because we are part of a community hospital, we provide a “continuum of care” that enables us to consistently communicate with your primary care physician and others in your care network. Our integrated local market network allows us to effectively partner with physicians, employers, payers and case managers to achieve optimal patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner. We also provide physical therapy and athletic training services to professional sports teams, colleges, universities and high schools. We offer a wide array of rehabilitative services that meet a diversity of needs. Our core services include: sports and orthopedic rehabilitation, back and neck rehabilitation, aquatic therapy, WorkStrategies Program (FCEs, work injury prevention and treatment), lymphedema treatment, women’s health, pediatric therapy and much more.


Community Involvement
Running Newsletter Minnesota NovaCare has produced its first 'Running With The Dove' newsletter. In this issue, Physical Therapists Brian Nelson and David Rickheim discuss running in the cold winter months here in Minnesota. We will be distibuting our newsletter at local running events and in stores where running products are sold. You can get your electonic copy by emailing Paul Hansen at phansen@novacare.com. Relay For Life Athletic Trainer and Massage Therapist for NovaCare Rehabilitation, Tiffany Thorn, shared her time and skills with the Monticello Cancer Center team doing massages in the 'Survivor Tent.' This event celebrates those who have survived cancer, honors those that have passed and raises funds for research looking for a cure. Tiffany was honored to do massages for the cancer survivors after they participated in the walk/run. Thank you to Tiffany for your hard work.


Contracts
Minnesota Vikings NovaCare in Minnesota is the proud provider of physical therapy and athletic training services to the Minnesota Vikings athletes and staff. This exclusive agreement is the second of its kind for NovaCare in the NFL. NovaCare also provides similar services to the Philadelphia Eagles. 'Our clinical team treats athletes of all abilities and we are proud to bring our expertise to the professional level,' stated Donn Berkeland, P.T., and Area Vice President for NovaCare's Midwest market. 'This is a defining moment for our entire staff as it gives us the opportunity to further educate the community on the important role physical therapy and athletic training services have on the road to recovery. With an appropriate, individualized treatment plan, athletes have the ability to get back in the game safer and more effectively.' 'We are excited to work as partners with NovaCare Rehabilitation. They will help provide our team with strong orthopedic expertise as well as bringing a reputation for clinical excellence. We are very confident that NovaCare Rehabilitation's philosophy of patient care and customer service is a perfect fit with the Minnesota Vikings,' stated Eric Sugarman, Head Athletic Trainer for the Minnesota Vikings.


Events
NAHL Shootout in Minnesota What is the NAHL? They are the North American Hockey League. Who is the NAHL? They are young men from throughout the United States and Canada working and competing for college scholarships and National Hockey League contracts. The Shootout is one of the largest tournaments of its kind in North America. Athletes from the USA and Canada compete with and against each other and who do they ask to provide medical coverage? NovaCare's Athletic Medicine Team. Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and other medical staff from NovaCare are there to evaluate injuries, provide first aid and assist in returning the injured athletes back to the ice.


News Corner
VISA Gymnastics Championships When the nation's top gymnasts square off to crown national champions at the VISA Gymnastics Championships, NovaCare Athletic Trainers were there. For the second time in five years, NovaCare was asked to provide Athletic Training Services to the athletes competing in Minnesota. From those competing in the Junior Division to Olympic Champions, Athletic Trainers from NovaCare were there to provide first aid, injury evaluations and rehabilitation. Congratulations to all those who competed!


Program Offering
What is Lymphedema? Lymphedema is characterized by abnormal build up of fluid that causes swelling most often seen in the arms and legs. Lymphedema occurs when there is damage or there is an abnormality in the functioning of the lymph system. Treatment of Lymphedema: Although lymphedema is not curable, documented research shows a combination of specific exercises, manual therapy techniques, bandaging, special skin care and the use of compression garments can dramatically decrease the symptoms of lymphedema. Lymphedema Program: The primary goal of NovaCare’s Lymphedema Program is to restore our patients’ function and independence following the onset of lymphedema symptoms. Shirley Kleinwachter, PT, CLT, provides individualized treatment plans to meet the specific needs of our patients. Clinician Profile: Shirley Kleinwachter, P.T., CLT, at the NovaCare Monticello Clinic, is our Lymphedema Specialist in the Twin Cities metro area. Shirley earned her B.S. Degree from the University of Minnesota. She has been a Physical Therapist for over 30 years. Over 20 of those years spent in Monticello. She is certified in manual lymph drainage and complete decongestive therapy. Shirley utilizes the Vodder Technique in treating primary and secondary lymphedema, plus vascular diseases such as chronic venous insufficiency, peripheral vascular disease and diabetic ulcers. She also is successful in reducing chronic edema from sports injuries and in post-surgical cases. Shirley is also certified to fit compression garments and garments can be ordered through NovaCare.
