    Helping Kids the Ultimate Way

Matt Shedlock, MS, PT, COMT recently worked with host Pittsburgh Ultimate to provide an educational seminar entitled Training to Prevent Common Ultimate Frisbee Injuries.  High school coaches from around the Pittsburgh area had the opportunity to learn how to safely train their athletes to prevent the most common injuries to Ultimate athletes - ankle sprains, knee/ACL sprains, patellofemoral pain and shoulder injuries.  If you have any quesions about Ultimate injuries and want to take advantage of Matt's decade of experience working with Ultimate athletes, email him at MShedlock@HQ.NovaCare.com, or call his office in Oakland at 412-622-7522.

    Sharing Our Knowledge

John Kushner, MPT, ATC, COMT, and center manager of our NovaCare Rehabilitation center in Waynesburg recently spent an evening with 20 persons in a multiple sclerosis support group at Southwest Regional Hospital. While there, John talked about the benefits of a regular exercise routine for individuals who struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Oftentimes, people with multiple sclerosis shy away from exercise because of how quickly they can become tired and fatigued. By teaching people how to monitor their exertion levels, John was able to help them establish home exercise programs more tailored to their individual needs. John also provided those in attendance with helpful tips on how to make their home a safer place by reducing the risks of falls.

If you or anyone you know struggles with multiple sclerosis and have questions for John, please feel free to contact him at JKushner@novacare.com.

    Professional Recognition
    Congratulations

To the below Physical Therapists for earning advanced certification in Manual Therapy.

    What Is Manual Therapy?
Manual Therapy is a collection of specialized techniques used by therapists to help muscles relax, decrease pain and restore normal movement to joints.  These techniques, which include massage and stretching, are usually performed in conjunction with exercises and have been shown to be one of the most effective types of treatment available for various conditions.  Our therapists decide which techniques are best suited for each patient after performing a thorough evaluation and discussing treatment goals.

The Ola Grimsby Institute (OGI) is known for its world-renowned education programs in manual therapy.  The uniqueness of the OGI programs lies in the combination of an evidence-based patient management approach, with advanced, hands-on training and the instructor’s dedication to the success and the health of patients.  The following Physical Therapist's recently completed an extensive Clinical Certification Program for Manual Therapy.  The program consists of a series of courses taught over 10 months.  The program consists of 131 instructional hours, featuring 50% didactic instruction and 50% lab experience.  Written and practical exams are conducted on the final weekend of the program.  Through the successful completion of this rigorous program, the below Therapist's have earned his/her Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) credentials.

Certified Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) Testers

Recently, five of our Western PA therapists underwent certification in the Select Medical Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE). An FCE is a test that determines a person's ability to safely perform an array of work-related tasks such as lifting, walking, carrying, climbing and sitting. FCEs are commonly used by physicians and employers to determine if a person is able to safely perform the daily tasks required by his or her job description. With 14 local FCE testers, call one of our locations today to see if our FCE services can help you and your company.

Congratulations to our new FCE testers:

    • Emily Engelhardt - Butler
    • Martine Marino - Squirrel Hill
    • Kelley Watson, CHT - West Homestead
    Programs We Offer
    Concussion Services

Advances in the past decade have opened the medical communty's eyes to the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of concussions. We no longer view a concussion as an event where someone is "knocked out". We now know that concussions can occur from any blow to the head, or from any quick, forceful movements to the head and neck, such as whiplash. Many people experience no change in consciousness during a concussive event. Symptoms of a concussion can include:

    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Headaches
    • Blurred Vision
    • Ringing in the Ears
    • Changes in Balance
    • Difficulty Concentrating
    • Difficulty Remembering
    • Difficulty Solving Simple Problems
    • Unexplained Emotional Changes
    • Agitation

If you feel you may be experiencing any of these symptoms due to a concussion, contact one of our clinics today to learn how we can help you.

    Post Offer Employment Testing
Last year, our Western PA team performed over 1500 Post Offer Employment Tests (POETs) for local employers.  POETs are required by some employers to ensure newly hired employees are capable of safely performing all of the required tasks of their position before they spend their first day on the job. POETs can help to reduce risk of employee injury, which in turn helps control costs associated with Workers' Compensation claims. If you would like more information about how we can tailor a POET to your company's needs, please contact Sean Miller, director of WorkStrategies, at 724-745-5750, extension 12.
