Dry Needling by a Physical Therapy: What You Should Know

Dry needling is a technique physical therapists use, where allowed by state law, to treat myofascial pain. The technique uses a filiform needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle, known as trigger points. It is NOT acupuncture.

Other terms commonly used to describe dry needling include trigger point dry needling and intramuscular manual therapy.

Physical therapists use dry needling with the goal of releasing or inactivating trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. Research supports that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient's return to active rehabilitation. Conditions that benefit from dry needling include:

    • Low back and neck pain
    • Shoulder and arm pain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, impingement
    • Hip and leg pain, sciatica, muscle strain, calf tightness and spasm
    • Foot and ankle sprain, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis
    • Headache, face and jaw pain
    • Fibromyalgia... And much more!

Please call 513-943-4400 for the nearest NovaCare Rehabilitation center that provides dry needling treatments.
