Recently, Tia Cunningham, DPT, from our Select Physical Therapy center in Ashland was asked by a former patient and teacher to speak at John M. Gandy Elementary School on April 22, 2015, for Career Day.
Tia spoke to fifth grade classes about the physical therapy profession. She explained what a physical therapist does, where they can work and the education needed to become one. She described and passed around some of the different tools used by physical therapists. The students enjoyed trying to balance on the Balance Disc Tia brought in. Tia also brought in some TheraBand samples and each students was able to keep one.
Select Physical Therapy was proud to be involved with such a great group of students and Tia enjoyed her time sharing the physical therapy profession with them. Special thanks to John M. Gandy Elementary School for the opportunity!
Select Physical Therapy is pleased to announce the addition of another specialty program to our central Virginia community's service offerings. Dry Needling (DN), also known as intramuscular manual therapy/trigger point dry needling, is a modern Western medical modality. DN is a procedure in which filiform needles are used to deactivate myofascial trigger points. It is NOT acupuncture.
What Type of Conditions Can Be Treated With Dry Needling?
Dry needling can be used to treat low back and neck pain (including radiculopathy), shoulder and arm pain (tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, impingement), hip and leg pain (sciatica, muscle strains, calf tightness/spasm), foot pain (ankle sprain, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis), headache, face and jaw pain (TMJ), and fibromyalgia.

Select Physical Therapy is excited to announce a new partnership with the Greater Richmond Aquatics Partnership (GRAP) to bring aquatic therapy to Central Virginia! Aquatic therapy is offered at GRAP's flagship facility, the Collegiate School Aquatics Center, located at 5050 Ridgedale Parkway in Richmond. GRAP is a non-profit entity whose mission is to provide aquatic access to all residents of Central Virginia. The facility is a state-of-the-art aquatics center that features a 25-yard, 6-lane multi-purpose pool, a handicap accessible Hydroworx 3500i therapy pool, community and workout rooms and offers mezzanine and spectator seating. Select Physical Therapy's Laura Neely, DPT, will be overseeing the aquatic therapy program.
About The Hydroworx 3500i Therapy Pool
The Hydroworx 3500i Therapy Pool utilizes two underwater treadmills integrated seamlessly into the floor. Underwater cameras and a flat screen viewing monitor greatly enhance the therapist's diagnostic capabilities when evaluating a patient's gait patter, in addition to allowing the patient the ability to watch and adjust underwater movements, ensuring proper form and safety.
